It should come as no surprise that the most misspelt words in the English language is ‘separate’ – people like to swap the first ‘a’ for an ‘e’.

This revelation comes from a poll by OnePoll.com which carried out a study on a sample of 3,500. Second most popular word to fall victim to misspelling was ‘definitely’ - where the first 'i' is often replaced with an ‘a’ or an ‘e’ - followed by 'manoeuvre', then ‘embarrass’ (not enough Rs and Ss usually!)

Worryingly, despite the number of errors 77 per cent of people thought their spelling was ‘good’ or ‘very good’. It obviously isn’t.

Cheerily, the survey did reveal that 10 per cent of us are prepared to correct others over their spelling – please count Word Worker in that tally.

So, the lesson here is get a dictionary, don’t rely on the spell checker and be prepared to stick your neck out and point out spelling errors and typos. Maybe this way we can help to improve the nation’s spelling.
